Confirmation and The Church

The confirmation experience is for youth eighth grade or older who are interested in becoming a member of the church.  It is a journey that begins in November and concludes when these young men and women make their commitment to the church in June.

We hope that each member of HPC will pray for the youth who go on this journey of confirmation. Pray for those who are ready and those who are not.  Pray for those who have no idea what it means to be a member of a church and those who feel as though they already are a member.  Pray for the ones who you can name and the ones who you may have never met.  Also pray for our class leaders as they prepare to guide all of us on this amazing journey.

Confirmation is meant to be a mature statement of faith by an already baptized person. Confirmation has also been referred to as "affirmation of baptism." In simple terms, it is a chance for someone to affirm the vows their parents made for them at baptism: professing their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, renouncing evil and affirming their reliance on God’s grace, and declaring their intention to participate actively and responsibly in the worship and mission of the church.

During the journey of confirmation, the youth will discover their faith and learn how to articulate what that means to them. They will explore God’s grace in a world that is filled with evil and explore how to fully rely on that grace along the road of life. They will also explore what it means to be active in the worship and mission of the church. At the end of this wonderful journey, our youth will be ready to serve the church that has been serving them.

One of the major culminations of confirmation in most PC(USA) churches is each youth will have their own statement of faith to share with the session, family, and friends.

Traditionally, statements of faith have been expressed in written form, but trying to limit faith to written form is limiting the Holy Spirit. St. Augustine said, "He who sings prays twice."  I believe that could also apply to those who paint, dance, or create in any medium. Ask any painter, most will tell you, there are pieces of their souls and God in their painting. Many of our youth will choose to write a statement, but some may create their statement in other ways.

God's love and grace is greater than any word in any language.  God's love and grace is bigger than any of our hearts and minds. In creating a statement of faith, our youth will take things that are way too big to understand cosmically and express what they mean personally.
