PDA continues to respond to the Haiti earthquake

As of Thursday, February 18, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) response to the earthquake in Haiti has exceeded $500,000.  PDA sent $100,000 immediately after the event, using funds from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering.  A denomination-wide emergency appeal was issued and additional funds have been sent to partners on the ground in Haiti.  These donations have helped ecumenical partners to establish 15 food and water distribution stations, distribute 20,000 tents, and provide other needed services and supplies.

PDA will continue to assess long-range recovery needs and develop a comprehensive plan to help the Haitian people rebuild their lives over the next several years.  Just so you know, PEVA churches have sent $16,791 to this cause through our office over the past few weeks.  Business Manager David Carney is forwarding funds on a regular basis as soon as they are deposited.  Thank you for your faithfulness.  When we work together, our witness is powerful.

Stamps for Mission

When you receive cards and letters from friends and family, please remember our cancelled stamp project. Here is a short guide to which stamps to collect:

• All commemoratives (large stamps) of any denomination
• Computer-generated stamps with pictures (photo-stamps)
• Fish and Wildlife Service stamps
• All airmail and express mail
• All foreign stamps
• Old U.S. stamps, Famous Americans stamps
• First Day covers, stamp albums, picture postcards pre-1930
• Postal embossed envelope corners (cut so all of picture and value is on the corner: 3"x3" square)

Please do not send in common small stamps as they have no value to collectors. These include: flags, Christmas, veggies, lovebirds and other love stamps, liberty bell, forever stamps, sunflower, etc.

When cutting out stamps, leave a border of 1/4" to 1/2" around the stamp. This is important!

Stamps are sold to collectors. Last year, together with other PEVA churches, we raised about $7,000 which went to our sister-churches in the Congo for medical supplies and educational scholarships.

Turn stamps in to the church office anytime.

Habitat for Humanity

"Presbyterian House"

In January 2010, the Habitat for Humanity house built by local Presbyterian Churches will be complete. Located in Hampton on Rolfe Street, this one-story house came together thanks to Habitat staff and numerous volunteers from the many Presbyterian (and other) churches in the area. Several Hidenwood members volunteer their time and home-building expertise on Wednesdays and Saturdays on any of several Habitat projects in the area. To join them, and to get on their e-mail list for more specific information, contact: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
