Here are the musicians Hidenwood welcomed in 2009-10
Sunday, September 27 Russian pianists Oksana Lutsyshyn and Andrey Kasparov bring their special blend of technical brilliance to our two grand pianos. Our Yamaha grand will be joined in this concert for the first time with our new Steinway grand piano for an afternoon of 20-fingered virtuosity. Sunday, November 8, 4 p.m. Hidenwood’s own handbell ensemble will offer us a very unusual program of music for quartet, quintet, trio, duet and solo bells. The program will include such favorites as “The Swan” by Saint-Saens, Katchaturian’s fiery “Sabre Dance”, and “The Maple Leaf Rag”, all arranged for handbells and chimes. Sunday, November 15 Hampton Roads’ premiere woman’s choral ensemble Bellissima! will present a lively concert of music of the dance from around the world. Director Deborah Carr takes us on a choral journey from Latin America to Scotland with music that will set your toes to tapping. Sunday, December 13 Virginia Symphony principal harpist Barbara Chapman and principal flutist Debra Cross combine their talents in this gentle program of lyric and serene music for the season.
Sunday, January 24 The Tidewater Guitar Orchestra and the choral ensemble ScholaCantorum will join forces with the ODU Percussion Ensemble to present a program featuring the Misa Criolla, an Hispanic Folk Mass by Arl Ramirez. This collaborative concert will focus on the music, rhythms and folk traditions of Hispanic America.
Sunday, February 28 The Hampton Roads Woodwind Quintet will regale us with music by Taffanel, Ibert and selections from Porgy and Bess.
Sunday, March 7 The Williamsburg Chamber Players will offer us a program of classics for piano, violin and cello under the direction of Carl Andersen. Brahms’ Piano Quartet, op 25, will be featured. Sunday, April 25 Olivia Hajiioff and Marc Ramirez are an award-winning violin and violin/viola duo who perform music of all styles and periods, including folk music and French duos spanning 300 years. They come to us by way of the Virginia Arts Commission touring artist series. Sunday, May 23 Come enjoy a lighthearted concert of the music of Broadway, piano duets by Deborah and Lawrence Carr, Chopin, and Vivaldi. This is our final concert of the year. Receptions follow each concert. A freewill offering will be accepted to help offset the expenses of the artists.
