Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool

Our life-oriented curriculum is developmentally appropriate to early childhood, offering the child a chance to explore, test and begin to understand the world by using natural curiosity and creative thinking.

Families of all faiths are welcome. Although our curriculum does not teach religion, our staff members have their own church affiliation, and we strive to provide a Christian atmosphere emphasizing sharing with and caring for one another and acknowledging a God who loves us all.

The program is mornings only. Activities are designed to help children develop skills in preparation for the formal learning that will be required in kindergarten and beyond. A typical day includes:

    *          Circle time for group discussion and sharing
    *          Playground time (or activities in the gym on rainy days)
    *          Creative art projects
    *          Directed learning of new concepts
    *          Singing and moving to music and rhythm instruments
    *          Snack time
    *          Free play in classroom and use of learning games

We also offer an Extended Day Program before school (8-9:15 a.m.) and after school (noon-5 p.m.) for 3 & 4-year-olds enrolled in the preschool.  Children bring their own lunches.  Snacks are provided in the afternoon.  The extended day includes: outdoor play, rest time, stories, music, arts & crafts, and free time to explore blocks, computers, puzzles, and games.

Over the years, our program has received high praise from kindergartens in the area. We often hear that Hidenwood children are “very well-prepared”.The mission has not changed—we still hope to give all our students the best possible start for their school years. We have enjoyed excellent continuity in leadership and instructional staff and operate under the oversight of a rotating Board of Directors which reports regularly to the Christian Education Committee of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church.

We welcome parents and children to observe our classes!

Nationally Accredited Program

Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the leading organization of early childhood professionals.  We are proud to have earned the mark of quality from NAEYC and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards.  NAEYC Accreditation lets families in our community know that children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.

To earn NAEYC accreditation, Hidenwood went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Criteria. The program received NAEYC accreditation after an on-site visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the standards.

Three-Star Rated by Virginia Star Quality Initiative

Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool is a participant in the Star Quality Initiative, a state program to improve quality in early childhood care and education across the state of Virginia. With the majority of a child's brain development occurring during the first five years of life, high quality care and education is critical.

Hidenwood has been awarded three stars which means the program's quality surpasses standards set by various regulatory agencies. Staff is trained in early childhood education and will continue to expand their knowledge and skills. Classrooms promote positive relationships, engaging activities, positive behavior management, and concept development. Teachers are trained in CPR and First Aid. Child/staff ratios are low. The program values parent communication, supports individual needs, and encourages smooth transitions to kindergarten.

We welcome parents and children to observe our classes—just contact the Preschool office between 8 a.m.-2 p.m. to arrange a convenient time for your visit: 757-595-8351 or click here to e-mail the preschool director

Our preschoolers are invited to join a children’s choir created especially for them! This fun group sings songs about nature, animals, ourselves and our world, while also learning to play simple instruments. The Preschool Choir joins Hidenwood’s Children's Choir to sing for special programs several times a year. (Your elementary school-age children can join the church's Children's Choir)

 For Extended Care Students

“Godly Play”

 Wednesdays, 12:15-1 p.m.

Using a careful telling of scripture stories, engaging story figures, and a variety of creative activities, “Godly Play” encourages children to seek answers to their faith questions. The children are invited to wonder about themselves, God, and the world in a way that is playful and meaningful. “Godly Play” respects the innate spirituality of children and encourages them to use their curiosity and imagination to experience the mystery and joy of God. Help our Preschool Earn Free Money!!!

Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool takes advantage of fundraising opportunities that are offered through local businesses and products we use frequently. There is no additional cost to you and it helps our school tremendously.  Anyone can participate in these programs, so please be sure to ask all of your family members and friends to participate. It’s so incredible that even those across the country, through e-mail, or Facebook can help!!

HARRIS TEETER:  Through Harris Teeter’s “Together in Education” program, a portion of your spending will go to our school each time you shop.  Just sign up for your FREE Vic card and have the cashier link it to HP Preschool. Vic cards can also be linked online at www.harristeeter.com; click on “Together in Education,” select “Link to your school,” and fill out the information. The program runs from August to June, so be sure to link your card to HP Preschool at the beginning of each school year.  Even if you have registered before, you must re-register each year. Something you may want to consider is that a Vic card can be linked to more than one school. (Click on logo above to go directly to the link site.)

CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION:  Collect the labels from Campbell’s products (Soups, Prego, Swanson, Goldfish crackers, etc.). Also, collect Pepperidge Farm products and lids from V8 Splash beverages. Please send any of these with your child to the preschool.  The products' UPCs are assigned a point value; points are redeemed for merchandise for our school. (Click on logo to go to Campbell's Labels for Education website.)

CAPRI SUN: Save the empty pouches; flatten them and put 10 in a zip-loc sandwich bag; deliver them to the collection box outside of the preschool office.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION:  Although preschools are not eligible to participate in the Box Tops for Education program, any box tops turned into us will be given to a local, public elementary school.  Cut out the box top from General Mills, Betty Crocker, and Ziploc products and send them with your child to the preschool. Take care not to cut off the expiration date.

FOOD LION & FARM FRESH: are not presently offering an incentive program for preschools.

These are the fundraisers with which we are starting our year; however, if we hear of any others (perhaps from you?), we will definitely consider them and let you know of other ways you can contribute easily to your child’s education!

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to call the school and speak to our director, 757-595-8351. She can also put you in touch with someone on the fundraising committee. Thank you for helping Hidenwood Presbyterian Preschool supply our students with additional materials and equipment for the best learning environment possible!!
