Worship at Hidenwood Presbyterian is built around the scripture lesson for the day. We use liturgy to serve the scriptural theme, so there is some variety in what we do at each service. Some pusical pieces are accompanied by the organ or piano, and others by guitars and drums. Sometimes all instruments play together. Most of the service is printed into the bulletin although some of the music and liturgy can be found on our rear-projection screen as well. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. The goal is for our people to leave feeling that they have truly worshiped God today.

What you can expect inside
We promise we won’t ask you to stand up during a service to be recognized! But you won’t be invisible either. Our greeters will introduce themselves and welcome you to the service. They may suggest you check out our Visitor’s Center where you will find more information about the church and our many programs. You may sit wherever you like–seats are not reserved. Friendship pads will be passed down the pews during the service to members and visitors alike. If you choose to give us your contact information, we’ll follow up with a card thanking you for your visit. You will not receive a phone call unless you specifically indicate that you would like our pastor to contact you.
Children are always welcome
All children, regardless of age, are welcome in worship. In fact, we encourage children to attend services as a way to learn about worship through participation and observation. For younger children our nursery is open every Sunday from 9:15AM. – 12:30, where vetted and trained attendants care for newborns to children up to age 4.
Hidenwood observes the sacrament of communion the first Sunday of each month, and during special services such as Maundy Thursday. Everyone is welcome to participate. Our church officers serve the congregation in their seats, but occasionally we serve communion by intinction, in which you dip a shred of bread into a goblet of juice.
What to wear
You will find a wide variety of dress at our services. Most people wear business casual, but you will find some other worshipers in jeans, suits and ties, and dresses.
How to get here
We’re located in midtown Newport News, convenient to all areas of the Virginia Peninsula and beyond. Christopher Newport University is right up the street, and the Mariner’s Museum is about one mile away.
Plenty of parking available
We occupy a whole block! That means there is plenty of parking on our site. Handicapped spaces are clearly marked and located at the most accessible of our entrances. If you or someone coming with you needs assistance upon arrival, ushers will be available. You may also contact the church office in advance to make any special arrangements.
